THE SECOND WORLD WAR
The Nursing Services
***

As time goes on, there is a growing interest in the events, people and places of the Second World War, and an increase in the number of family historians looking for information surrounding the service of their relatives during the conflict. These pages contain some transcriptions of original documents held at The National Archives, which might provide some background detail and information about members of the military nursing services, their hospitals and their work. There are a number of personal accounts to be found here:
Nurses' accounts of service overseas in WW2
which cover both the evacuation of France during the summer of 1940, and also day-to-day activities in many other parts of the world during the war. And on the next page there is a list of the locations of 122 British General Hospitals active during the Second World War - most moved around a great deal, and a few didn't seem to stand still for more than a minute at a time!
Locations of British General Hospitals during the Second World War
Nominal Rolls of the nurses who went to France with the British Expeditionary Force in the early days of the war, and who were evacuated in May and June 1940 can be found here with brief background information:
Nominal Rolls of nurses with the BEF, 1939-1940
I hope there will be a lot more content to come over time.
